Conde Nast’s VANITY FAIR magazine was written and published by the blue-blooded swells of old Manhattan entirely for their own enjoyment and that of their mutual WASPY co-swells luxuriating on Fifth Avenue. In early 1918 these privileged editors did their bit to confound the advancement of Prussianism by printing this handy chart of U.S. Naval officer insignia. In an uncharacteristic spirit of egalitarianism, these editors galantly added one N.C.O. insignia and 16 naval ratings marks for all of us to study, as well.
