Val Peterson (1903 – 1983), Eisenhower’s czar of the Federal Civil Defense Administration (1953 – 1957), was profiled by the Weekly News Review shortly after he took the position. In this article he explained how important it was that American youth get active in the civil defense of the nation and that many of the finest minds in government tended to feel that at least 70% of the Soviet bombers could be shot down before reaching their targets.
