After eight months of heavy fighting in Korea the United States Congress voted to widen the draft pool and lengthen the service of each recruit. The steely resolve of the elected class was exhibited to a further degree when they also voted the same week to add a new aircraft carrier to the fleet in addition to some 172 other new vessels.
