Haydée Santamaría was the only woman to take part in every chapter of the Cuban Revolution. Although totally unknown outside of Cuba, Santamaría was a trusted confidant in Fidel Castro’s circle and friend of Che Guevara. Following the victorious conclusion of the revolution, Santamaría established the cultural and arts institution, Casa de las Americas, which attracted the avant gard artists of the little island nation and exposed Cubans to some of their nation’s finest Communist artists. This article reported on her imprisonment under Batista and clandestine work acquiring money and supplies for Castro’s guerrilla fighters in the mountains.

In 1980 she died by her own hand.
