Subhas Chandra Bose (1897 – 1945) spent much of the Twenties and Thirties brainstorming with Gandhi and Nehru as to how best they might secure sovereignty for their beloved India. By 1939 Bose broke ranks with his fellows at the Indian National Congress, believing that British rule would end a good deal quicker if the Indians signed on with the Axis:
“With the Japanese invasion of Burma and the desperate attempt to capture India’s Imphal Plain, Bose activities gained in size and importance. Made a general by Tojo, he formed an Army of Liberation and is now at the front – not as a fighting man, but as a propagandist…. Day in and day out, he broadcasts to India, damning Gahdhi and Nehru as false and discredited leaders, urging the people to kill and burn.”
