Posted on the right is the eyewitness observation of French novelist Pierre Loti (b: Julien Viaud, 1850 – 1923). His dispatch was filed from one of the forward most field hospitals in France where some the earliest Allied victims of German chemical weapons deployments had been evacuated.
It was estimated that the French Army of that war had lost 8,000 men due to chemical warfare.
