Attached on the right are five black and white commercial drawings illustrating the British Army sleeve insignia worn throughout the First World War. Sleeve insignia, Sam Brown belts, jodhpurs and riding boots were the elements that combined to make the appearance of British officers such distinct and uniquely attractive targets to enemy marksmen; by the time the Second World War rolled around uniform regulations had changed in order to make the profile of officers exactly like those of his men.
