A Stars and Stripes journalist examined the language spoken by the A.E.F. and found that a
“universal slang in this man’s army is as hard to find as universal peace in this man’s world.”
Perhaps it was all due to the fact that we weren’t in that war long enough to make it our own. The junior officers photographed above were, no doubt, interrupted while attempting to search for American slang along the Western Front.
