Although the terms of the Versailles Treaty guaranteed that the Allied occupation of the Rhineland would continue up to the year 1935, a complete withdrawal took place in 1930. However, this article was written in 1928 and reports on how heartily sick the Germans were at having to host these armies for such a long period of time. Dr Gustav Stresemann, the Foreign Minister of Germany at the time made several eloquent pleas to the diplomatic community, as well as a few bitter statements to the European journals:
“Friendship between France and Germany is impossible as long as Allied troops remain in the occupation area of the Rhineland…”
